1. I love you or We love you. This is the most important thing you could say. Even if you aren’t used to saying it, I encourage getting used to it and tell this person. They need to hear it.

2. Everything is just fine and you aren’t missing anything. Try and make a point of being positive and upbeat. This person needs this so bad right now. This first call means the world to them. If they day comes that things aren’t fine make sure and stay as positive as possible. When you are locked up you feel like you are missing everything.

3. I (We) am not going anywhere and will be right here to support you. You will have to continue to convey this message for awhile. This is so comforting.

4. Do you need anything? Just let them know you are in their corner. Let them know you are their cheer leader.

5. Establish call times. If you are not around your phone all the time this is so important. It will give your loved one something to look forward to and really build their confidence.

Communication is so important to someone in prison. Even if you don’t know what to say, it means so much to just have the phone answered. Stay positive and upbeat. Encourage gratitude lists that maybe you can both do.

Remind your loved one that this is not the end but the beginning. What they learn from disappointment and pain are lessons that cannot be taught by any other teacher. These are experiences you never want to go thru again but it is such a unique experience that can be full of value if you just open your eyes. They have been evicted from their comfort zone and have nothing to lose.

God has the best timing. Romans 8 is full of hope for all, especially prisoners… Encourage your loved one to read and meditate on it.

Please don’t forget to send mail and books. Mail call is a big deal
